Bensenville, Illinois, U.S.A.-based importer Corfu Foods is recalling around 6,570 pounds of swai products imported from Vietnam that were not presented for import reinspection when they entered the United States.
Corfu imported the swai products on 15 January, 2022. The 15-pound bulk corrugated box packages are labeled "Pacific Dynasty swai fillets" with lot code VN 461 VI 354.
The swai (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), also known as striped catfish or iridescent shark catfish, was farm-raised in Vietnam.
The various sizes of frozen Pacific Dynasty Swai Fillets were shipped to foodservice institutions, restaurants, and retail locations in the U.S. states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said in an alert.
Consumers purchased the swai fillets either in bulk or hand-wrapped at retail fish counters.
“The problem was discovered when a company notified FSIS that they received and further distributed imported product without verifying that the product was presented for FSIS import reinspection,” FSIS said.
The agency said it is concerned that some product may still be held by consumers who purchased it.
“Restaurants and institutions are urged not to serve these products. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” the agency said.
However, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consuming the products, FSIS said.
“Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider,” it said.
