Crabmeat that was distributed to several distributors throughout the southern United States is being recalled and processors temporarily hault product production.
Irvington, Alabama, U.S.A.-based Irvington Seafood is recalling 1-pound packages of "Crabmeat: Jumbo, Lump, Finger, and Claw meat" because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the company said in a press release.
The United States Food and Drug Administration revealed the presence of listeria on cooking equipment and its cooking room, Irvington said.
“No crabmeat has been tested, but product may have potentially been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes due to cross contamination. We have decided to do a voluntary recall to ensure the safety of our consumers,” the company said.
No illnesses have been reported.
Irvington has suspended production of crabmeat “while FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem,” it said.
The recalled crabmeat was distributed to distributors in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
The recalled packages are marked with license number AL 111-C with the company name, Irvington Seafood. Batch numbers include: 130, 131, 132, 134, 137, 139, 141, 144, 145, 146, 148, 150.
