While Vietnam has not been immune to the crisis caused by COVID-19, it has managed to build a strong defense against it.
With limited resources, Vietnam has acted quickly to contain the virus. Nevertheless, the pandemic has still had a huge impact on Vietnam’s shrimp and pangasius trade, particularly to the U.S., E.U., and Chinese markets.
Farm gate prices were relatively high and stable from the beginning of January until before Tet holiday (12 February) due to the seasonal low availability of raw materials. After Tet, along with the outbreak of COVID-19 in China, prices of Pacific white shrimp (L. vannamei) tended to decrease slightly until mid-March. From the last week of March onwards, prices of Pacific white shrimp have started to decline sharply.
