Vietnam continued to raise the value of its seafood exports in May, achieving growth for the third month in a row, according to the latest customs data.
The country exported seafood worth USD 790.4 million (EUR 648.6 million) in the month, an increase of 24.7 percent year-on-year.
China was the only major market out of the top four destinations that saw sales value decline in May.
The United States remained the biggest buyer of seafood from Vietnam in value in the month, importing products worth USD 183 million (EUR 150.2 million), soaring 69.6 percent year-on-year. It was followed by Japan with USD 122.9 million (EUR 100.9 million), up 14.3 percent from the same month last year; China (excluding Hong Kong) with USD 95.9 million (EUR 78.7 million), falling 25.7 percent year-on-year; and South Korea with USD 66.8 million (EUR 54.8 million), up 3.6 percent.
Vietnam’s seafood export value has risen 13.3 percent to USD 3.27 billion (EUR 2.68 billion) in the first five months of 2021.
Key buyers so far this year are the U.S., with an export value of USD 666.8 million (EUR 547.3 million), a growth of 36 percent year-on-year; Japan with USD 552.1 million (EUR 453.2 million), up slightly 0.8 percent year-on-year; China with USD 348.3 million (EUR 286 million), falling 6.7 percent; and South Korea with USD 294.6 million (EUR 241.8 million), up 4.2 percent from the same period last year.
Other major destinations include the United Kingdom with a sales value of USD 117 million (EUR 96 million), 7.8 percent higher year-on-year; Thailand with USD 110.8 million (EUR 90.9 million), jumping 23.9 percent from January-May 2020; Australia with USD 106.2 million (EUR 87.1 million), a growth of 57.3 percent year-on-year; and Canada with USD 100.4 million (EUR 82.4 million), up 11.8 percent, customs data showed.
