9 times China made seafood headlines in August

Slow but steady

aNew.pngIt was a slow start, but the first transaction to be carried out between China and Southeast Asia's seafood markets via a new trading platform has gone through. The deal, which involved the sale of 25 metric tons of Vietnamese frozen Basa filets from Fuzhou Anxin to Jian Tong International in Hong Kong, occurred over wire at the China ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations] Marine Product Exchange.

The sale, according to SeafoodSource’s Mark Godfrey, “aims to be the price setter for the whole region by handling volumes of seafood cross-border between China and its Southeast Asian neighbors.”

“This is part of China’s ambitions to encourage cross border e-commerce at the same time as it also speeds up the liberalization of the Renminbi or Yuan currency,” Godfrey explained.
