Tilapia worries and woes

As August began, the Chinese ministry of agriculture could not shake its concern for the tilapia industry, what with investments plummeting for the sector by a whopping 46 percent during the first half of 2015. What’s more,
Tilapia, though, is only one piece of the bigger picture – one where Chinese aquaculture is struggling.
“Dig deeper into the voluminous ministry report and you’ll see that China’s eel exporters are in trouble – weak Japanese (main export market) demand and a strong Chinese currency. Shrimp producers are reporting that prices are slipping back as stocks recover. Even the predominantly domestically-focused carp farming sector – China’s biggest single aquaculture segment – is troubled by low profitability,” wrote SeafoodSource’s Mark Godfrey.
