9 times China made seafood headlines in August

Tilapia worries and woes

As August began, the Chinese ministry of agriculture could not shake its concern for the tilapia industry, what with investments plummeting for the sector by a whopping 46 percent during the first half of 2015. What’s more, input of seedlings into Chinese ponds also dropped in that timeframe by nearly 12 percent.

Tilapia, though, is only one piece of the bigger picture – one where Chinese aquaculture is struggling.

“Dig deeper into the voluminous ministry report and you’ll see that China’s eel exporters are in trouble – weak Japanese (main export market) demand and a strong Chinese currency. Shrimp producers are reporting that prices are slipping back as stocks recover. Even the predominantly domestically-focused carp farming sector – China’s biggest single aquaculture segment – is troubled by low profitability,” wrote SeafoodSource’s Mark Godfrey.
