Annual catches, earnings decline for HB Grandi

Icelandic seafood company HB Grandi landed 141,867 metric tons (MT) of fish valued at ISK 14 billion (USD 123 million, EUR 117 million) during 2016, representing a volume decline of 19 percent and a value drop of 16 percent compared with the previous year.

The reductions are largely attributed to a much lower pelagic catch with HB Grandi’s two vessels Venus and Vikingur landing 95,600 MT of fish valued at ISK 3.7 billion (USD 32.5 million, EUR 30.9 million) between them, compared with 128,000 MT with a value of ISK 4.6 billion (USD 40.4 million, EUR 38.5 million) landed by the company’s three pelagic vessels in 2015.

HB Grandi highlighted a substantial drop of 41,000 MT in capelin catches between the two years.

The company’s three freezer trawlers landed a total of 21,000 MT with a value of ISK 5.9 billion (USD 51.9 million, EUR 49.3 million) last year, representing declines in volume and value of 2.5 percent and 15 percent respectively. These reductions were mainly attributed to the increase in value of the krona compared to the currencies used by the company’s main export markets.

Its fresher trawlers’ catch was down 4 percent to 25,300 MT with a value of ISK 4.4 billion (USD 38.7 million, EUR 36.7 million), which was 14 percent less than in 2015.

Overall, HB Grandi’s trawler fleet landed approximately 46,300 MT of fish with a total value of ISK 10.3 billion (USD 90.5 million, EUR 86.1 million), down 3.5 percent and 15 percent respectively.
