Bangladesh shrimp prices drop dramatically

Country’s export of shrimp has not been doing well for sometime. Lately, the situation appears to be worsening as export orders for the prime variety of shrimps have registered a steady fall due mainly to declining demand from the key markets of Europe and the U.S. — destination of 80 percent of Bangladesh’s shrimp export.

Shrimp, one of the top export items of Bangladesh next to RMG, jute and jute goods, is believed to have been hit by the recession in the West. Bangladeshi shrimp, recognized as a delicacy as well as a high priced kitchen item overseas, is struggling to retain its market share amid uneven competition with low priced varieties from other sources. In the last fiscal, exports experienced a slump by 4.26 percent compared to that of the previous fiscal. ??Bangladesh, in the past decade, had to fight serious ordeal exporting shrimp to its major destinations. Meeting the compliance requirements of the European Union (EU) and the U.S. — namely the EU regulations and HACCP (hazard analysis at critical control points) respectably — had been a tormenting experience throughout the nineties.
