With its own seas overfished, China is seeking to increase its fisheries operations out of Myanmar, according to the long-distance fishing office of the Chinese ministry of agriculture.
The "Myanmar Project Coordinating Committee" met in Beijing recently, coordinated by fisheries official Zhao Li Ling. The Jiangsu Fishing Boat Inspection Department and representatives of trawler companies also attended the meeting.
With its sprawling coastline and comparatively pristine waters, Myanmar has long been attractive for China as a source of seafood, but the lack of reliable electricity and road infrastructure has frustrated Chinese firms seeking to produce shrimp and croaker in the country for re-export to China.
