An elite university in China has set up a new research project with key fishing authorities in the country’s leading fisheries city.
A project to establish “fishery performance indicators” is being drawn up by the Fishery Economy Research Task Force, part of the National Development Research Institute at what’s considered one of the country’s top universities.
Researchers from the National Development Research Academy at Peking University will initially focus on net-caught Pacific mackerel in China’s East Sea fished by vessels from Zhoushan, the country’s leading fishing port. The researchers will look at governance of stocks and enforcement of national fishery laws as well as fishery incomes and pricing, according to Xu Jin Tao, deputy dean of the National Development Research Institute.
China is looking for “new tools to measure fishery management and performance because resources are tightening in supply and fishermen’s income is being reduced,” noted Yin Yang, deputy chairperson of the Zhejiang Provincial Fishing Industry Economics Research Council, who joined Peking University researchers and officials for the launch of the performance indicators study in Zhoushan recently.
