Dalian, China ups seafood output in third quarter

One of China’s key fishery processing centers is reporting that efficiencies and mariculture production is helping to grow its output while its lowering costs.

Dalian’s third-quarter seafood output value of CNY 57 billion (USD 8.3 billion, EUR 7.8 billion) rose 8.5 percent year-on-year with its total tonnage at 1.84 million tons, up 4.7 percent, according to the Ocean and Fishery Bureau of Liaoning Province, of which Dalian is part.

The figures show “primary output” of seafood, which includes aquaculture, fishing and seedlings, of CNY 31.29 billion (USD 4.5 billion, EUR 4.3 billion), was up 5.8 percent. Dalian processors saw their revenues rise 12.3 percent to CNY 16 billion (USD 2.3 billion, EUR 2.2 billion), according to the bureau, though it doesn’t explain whether the earnings were from domestic or export sales.

Dalian has set high targets for increasing output – targets which appear to conflict with national targets on sustainability. Dalian wants to increase output 7 percent every year in the 13th Five Year Plan (2016-2020), which has created pressure for the province to increase output.
