ICES selects new president

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) has elected Cornelius Hammer to be its new president.

Hammer previously served as ICES First Vice President and German delegate to the organization. He is the deputy president of the Thünen Institute in Germany, and served until recently as director of the Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries in Rostock, Germany.

“During my time as president, ICES will increase its focus on integrated ecosystem assessments and the supporting data and has thus started to create a scientific foundation for the implementation of the ecosystem based approach,” Hammer said. “All this work will be reflected in ICES delivering more integrated scientific advice.”

ICES elected Hammer at a recent council meeting. He will assume his new role in November, taking over for outgoing President Paul Connolly. Hammer will serve as president for the next three years.

In addition to Hammer, ICES also named Danish delegate Fritz Köster First Vice President to replace Hammer. ICES also chose U.S. delegate Bill Karp to serve as a Vice President, replacing Piotr Margonski.
