Scottish farmed salmon producer Loch Duart announced earlier this month that it will be closing its Lochcarnan smokehouse, which it had owned since 2008.
“While the smokehouse produces a wonderful, delicious product, unfortunately the business has not been the success that we had envisaged,” the company said in a statement.
Up until 15 April, the company had been hoping for a local consortium would take over the business to ensure continuity of supply. While another group may still take over, there will be an “unavoidable” break in production.
Last year the company tried to set up a form of community ownership, which fell through “for reasons outside our control.”
“We regret that the staff have been made redundant but we aim to absorb some into the fish farming operations,” the company said, adding that it continues to employ 22 full-time staff at its fish farming operations on North and South Uist.
