Mexican, South American exporters look to China

Exporters offering high-end seafood products such as lobster, abalone and shark fin are turning to China amid the global economic crisis, as a means to weather the downturn.

Late last month, Mexican delegations visited seafood companies in China, including Dah Chong Hong, Eurasia and Sun Wah, in hopes of tapping new markets and technologies for its seafood products.

In mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, lobster, abalone and shark fin are high-value delicacies. The average 12-pack of canned abalone sells for about USD 1,500 (EUR 1,103) in China.

In addition to Mexico, various South American countries, along with the Maldives, are looking to expand their distribution reach into China with new seafood processing plants and a marketing strategy catering to the domestic market, according to China’s Ministry of Commerce.

In addition to lobster and abalone, lion paw clams, catarina clams, sea snails and giant squid are increasingly popular in China, as the country becomes more prosperous and its middle class grows.
