Ocean Choice International closes shrimp plant

Newfoundland, Canada-based seafood supplier Ocean Choice International announced the closure of its Port Union shrimp plant over the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, a decision marked by a difficult harvest year and poor market conditions.

The plant closure will affect the employees in the primary processing line that closed over the weekend. The company will keep the repacking line in operation for another month, employing 10 to 15 workers per shift.

Shrimp still being landed in Port Union may be shipped to the Ocean Choice processing facility in Port aux Choix.

Ocean Choice International CEO Martin Sullivan cited decreased supply and lower market prices as factors influencing the company’s struggle to keep both plants in operation.

The Fish, Food and Allied Workers' union in St. John's is seeking a meeting with the company to discuss the issue.
