Peru's fishing sector sees 20 percent growth

Peru's fisheries sector achieved a 20.96 percent growth from April 2016-2017 as compared to the previous twelve-month period, Peru's National Fisheries Society (SNP) reported.

The increase was primarily due to a massively better anchovy season, with the season’s catch totals rising by 1,860 percent compared to the previous season, to a total of 382,660 tons.

That increase was significant enough to affect Peru’s overall gross domestic product for the 12-month time period, with fishing contributing 0.24 percentage points Peru’s April GDP, according to Peru’s National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). The INEI also reported that Peru’s fishing vessels recorded a 112 percent increase in marine catch in April, resulting in a 101 percent increase in total output.
