Scottish salmon exports to U.S. up

Scotland exported a record 24,000 metric tons of fresh farmed salmon to the United States last year, up 50 percent from the previous year, the Scottish Salmon Producers' Organization (SSPO) unveiled on Monday.

The announcement came during Scotland Week (3 to 10 April) and about a month after the SSPO said Scotland shipped 65,480 metric tons of fresh farmed salmon overseas in 2009, up nearly 13,000 metric tons from 2008. Europe is Scotland's biggest export market, with France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Germany leading the way.

The United States, however, is the Scotland's main export market beyond Europe and has stepped up its imports of Scottish salmon as its demand for "top of the range, superior quality salmon" increases, said SSPO CEO Scott Landsburgh.

"The Scottish government is keen to do all we can through our focus on Scotland as a land of food and drink, to encourage people across the world to make authentic Scottish salmon a regular part of their diet," said Scottish Tourism Minister Jim Mather.
