Deals, Mergers, Partnership and Profits

Diversified Communications, parent company to SeafoodSource, is working to secure this year’s Seafood Expo Global/Seafood Processing Global event in Brussels after the European hub was struck by a series of attacks earlier in March. The event company noted that it has seen cancellations for the event amount to less than 2 percent of the exhibit space sold. Thai Union Group has made a major investment totaling THB 200 million (USD 5.7 million, EUR 5 million) in an effort to broaden the Global Innovation Incubator (Gii) at Mahidol University of Thailand in Bangkok. The investment fits in with Thai Union’s expansion goals for research and development. 

At the close of 2015, Chilean salmon producer AquaChile posted a consolidated profit that amounted to USD 99.4 million (EUR 88.7 million) in losses. The company said lower sales of Atlantic salmon, Pacific salmon, tilapia and trout were partially to blame for some of the variations in its depleted year-closing figures. 

Authorities and legal personnel continue to build their case against Carlos Seafood's executive Carlos Rafael, who has been accused of misinforming the U.S. government for years regarding the amount and species of fish caught by his fleet. Prosecutors were granted an extension to indict Rafael as of 28 March.

A fire in Emmonak, Alaska claimed three buildings belonging to salmon producer Kwik’Pak Fisheries and two owned by Yukon Marine Manufacturing. No one was harmed in the fire, and foul play is not suspected. Damaging are estimated to total USD 3 million (EUR 2.68 million). 

More than 500,000 shares of the Marine Harvest’s stock valued at more than NOK 60 million (USD 7.08 million, EUR 6.33 million) were cashed out by the company’s senior executives. Carried out on 21 March, transactions involved the exercise of options awarded to senior executives at Marine Harvest in 2012.
