Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment last week applauded the allocation of EUR 1,161,620,889 (USD 1,576,307,800) to the country from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) for 2014-2020. The amount represents 20.2 percent of the total EUR 6.5 billion (USD 8.8 billion) allocated to the fund, making Spain the leading recipient of fisheries funds.

This allocation will enable Spain to develop the new Common Fisheries Policy, as well as finance the new operating program that the ministry is drawing up in collaboration with the regional governments.
Furthermore, this fund will enable measures aimed at the sustainable development of fishing, aquaculture and fishing zones to be set in motion, and different needs will be tackled such as the adaptation of the fleet to available resources, investments in aquaculture and innovation, and the development of coastal zones and the transformation industry.
Control and compliance measures, the compilation of data, storage aid as a measure for trade regulation and the development of the comprehensive maritime policy will also be implemented.
