Trident uses new ‘wetlock’ box to ship salmon

Trident Seafoods is introducing a no-wax “wetlock” fiber box that meets specifications for airline shipment.

Just in time for Alaska’s Copper River salmon fishery, which opened on Thursday, the AquaSafe container is ideally suited for shopping fresh fish by air and can also be wet-iced, containerized and shipped by barge or truck, according to the Seattle-based seafood company.

The packaging, designed by International Paper, is also waterproof and fully recyclable, and the labeling reads, “Don’t boot our new box — Recycle it!”

Trident is the first company to use the two-piece container, it said.

“Incorporating more recyclable materials in our packaging is another example of how Trident is working to promote the continuous improvement of our overall sustainability profile,” said John van Amerongen, Trident’s chief sustainability officer. “Sustainability is more than managing fish stocks in the water. It has just as much to do with using those fish wisely after they’re harvested. We’re working very hard to fully utilize every fish we purchase from fishermen or catch ourselves by developing new products like fish oil, fishmeal, and even pet treats. This new, recyclable wetlock box is another step toward full utilization of our products, and we’re happy to continue marching in the right direction because it makes good sense to everybody.”
