The recent concerns over British seafood processor Young’s Seafood losing its contract with major retailer Sainsbury’s has attracted the attention of 10 Downing St., with Prime Minister David Cameron pledging support for the processor.
According to the Grimsby Telegraph, Cameron addressed the situation during the Question period of his address to the House of Commons. Members of Parliament expressed concerns that the loss of the contract, announced earlier this week, could lead to hundreds of job losses and possibly the closing of one of Young’s plants.
Cameron said the Regional Growth Fund is offering support, and that the government itself would not leave the company or its employees behind.
"The company will be talking to employees and the government stands ready to assist in any way that it can,” Cameron said, according to the paper.
Young’s lost the salmon contracts to Norwegian salmon farmer Marine Harvest. Sainsbury’s made the change to preserve its Scottish salmon sourcing credentials.
