The Young Fishermen Network, a U.K.-based initiative working to connect younger members of the commercial fishing community together to promote the profession, has joined together 11 new members with seafood chef Nathan Outlaw to promote the profession.
The Young Fishermen Network (YFN) was established as a supportive space to promote the next generation of fishermen in the U.K.
In May, it welcomed 11 new YFN representatives from different fishing ports around the Cornwall region who will serve as a point of contact for the local community to promote the profession as a viable career.
Along with the new representatives, professional seafood chef Nathan Outlaw has joined the effort to promote fishing. Outlaw runs two Michelin-starred restaurants and has appeared on a range of television programs in the U.K. and authored multiple books about seafood.
“Our restaurant depends on local fishermen who choose to fish with care and understand the quality of their catch; just a decade ago, Port Isaac was home to at least 10 full-time fishing boats, but these days, we are down to just two,” Outlaw said. “The fishermen are part of our community, so supporting them supports the future of the harbor.”
YFN is also working to host presentations in communities or local primary or secondary schools and at harbor festivals to promote fishing as a profession to bring greater understanding of the modern industry.
