Vietnam fisheries, aquaculture production up in Q1

Wild capture and aquaculture production in Vietnam increased by 3.4 percent and 1.8 percent respectively in the first-quarter of this year in spite of unfavorable weather conditions in some regions during the period, according to the latest statistics from the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Beset by monsoons, many vessels fishing out of northern provinces stayed ashore for long periods in the first three months of this year. Whereas fishing activities in the central and southern provinces benefited from kinder weather, lower fuel prices and higher market prices.

Capture production in the Southeast Asian country totaled 720,000 metric tons (MT) in Q1. This included 683,000 MT from marine fisheries, up 3.8 percent.

Tuna production in the quarter totaled 6,228 MT.

Meanwhile, its aquaculture output for the same period is expected to total 548,000 MT, including 189,875 MT of pangasius, 34,958 MT of black tiger shrimp and 18,980 MT of whiteleg shrimp.
