A funky range of packaged, dried salmon and squid snacks is being targeted at young consumers by snack-maker Jiangsu Tao Dou Foodstuffs Ltd Co, which was bought in 2015 by Chuying Agro-Pastoral Group Co Ltd., better known as one of China’s leading pig-breeding firms.
Taodou has focused its sales online, but also claims to have a network of distributors in traditional stores nationwide. The firm retails its 200-gram teppanyaki salmon and squid packs for CNY 22.30 (USD 3.48, EUR 2.99) on leading online retailer JD.com. Set up in 2011, Tao Dou also sells a large range of packaged dried-meat snacks.
Japanese dining trends are closely followed by China’s middle class, a factor which has increased in recent years given the relative strength of China’s currency against the yen. This has also served to make Japan a top destination for Chinese tourists. Japan ranked the second most popular destination among outbound Chinese tourists, who collectively made 150 million overseas visits in 2017.
