Cooke Aquaculture Inc. has potential plans for an expansion of its sea farming operations in Liverpool Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, according to a story in The Chronicle Herald.
The company, through its subsidiary Kelly Cove Salmon Ltd., was issued an option to lease by Nova Scotia Fisheries and Aquaculture for the site. According to Cooke, the company will be “exploring the option location to determine potential fit to establish an aquaculture site.”
The expansion could be up to a CAD 500 million (USD 381.7 million, EUR 335.4 million) investment, Cooke Vice President of Public Relations Joel Richardson told The Chronicle Herald.
“For example, we are mid-way through a CAD 20 million [USD 15.3 million, EUR 13.4 million] investment in upgrading our Northeast Nutrition fish feed manufacturing plant in Truro, sustaining upwards of 60 direct jobs, with growth potential on the horizon,” he said.
The expansion is part of the company’s “long-term vision and commitment to reinvesting in Atlantic Canada,” Richardson said.
A public meeting to discuss the project is scheduled for Tuesday, 30 October, in Liverpool. Some residents in the area have already expressed concerns about the expansion, according to the CBC.
According to Richardson, if the company applies for the new site, it will not be stocked until 2021.
