Listeria-fighting biotechnology to be highlighted at Seafood Expo North America

Maryland, U.S.A.-based biotechnology company Intralytix plans on bringing its expertise in the use of all-natural bacteriophages to target and eliminate specific pathogens to Boston, Massachusetts this month for Seafood Expo North America, taking place 11 to 13 March.

The company’s technologies, including its ListShield product, could play a key role in combating foodborne illness – one of the seafood industry’s biggest foes, according to Intralytix Food Safety Division Director Greg Strang.

"One of the most dangerous sources of foodborne illness, Listeria monocytogenes, is too often found on seafood products like cold-smoked salmon. Like other foods without a cook step, it requires an effective intervention process to reduce or eliminate the bacteria," Strang said in a news release.

ListShield possess all-natural bacteriophage specifically targeted at Listeria monocytogenes, Strang said, and is therefore a suitable option for seafood processors' critical food safety initiatives.

“A standard application as part of your HACCP plan can consistently provide a two-log reduction in [Listeria monocytogenes] and is considered a processing aid so no labeling is required,” he said.

The technology is certified organic, halal, and kosher, and imparts “no organoleptic side effects such as changes in taste, odor, color, or texture," Strang added.

Intralytix will display its technological applications for the seafood industry during SENA18 at booth #2286.
