Depleting inventories, higher prices and modest projections from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game had wild Alaska salmon harvesters feeling nervous by mid-March of 2017.

“There is very little [frozen inventory] left. We are all anxiously awaiting for the new season,” said Steven N. Chartier, vice president of sales and marketing for Peter Pan Seafoods in Seattle, Washington, to SeafoodSource’s Christine Blank.

A tremendous 2017 season later put much of Alaska harvesters’ initial fears to rest – around 224.6 million wild salmon worth an estimated USD 678.8 million (EUR 582.4 million) were landed last year, up 66.7 percent from USD 407.3 million (EUR 349.5 million) in value compared to 2016. Revisit the Alaska salmon harvest numbers and the region’s projection range for 2017 with the story below.
