Prepared seafood and meal kits were among the top trends inspiring retailers at the fish and shellfish counter in 2017.

“Prepared seafood offers fewer barriers to department entry for consumers that aren't comfortable with preparing raw seafood,” explained Sarah Schmansky, director of account services for Nielsen Perishables Group, to SeafoodSource Contributing Editor Christine Blank regarding the convenience appeal of such retail items.

Japanese and Hawaiian-inspired seafood dishes were also picked as popular themes for offerings in 2017.

“We will see an increase in tuna poke, salmon poke and ahi poke. More importantly, you will be seeing poke offered with vegetables, which will drive up profits for the retailer while garnering incremental customer adoption,” said Steven Johnson, a grocerant guru at consultancy Foodservice Solutions in Tacoma, Washington.
