Canada approves use of sea lice drug

Canada has granted full approval for the use of SLICE (emamectin benzoate) for controlling immature and adult stages of sea lice in farmed salmon, a Health Canada spokesperson confirmed to SeafoodSource this week.

The approval was granted after the parasiticide, developed by Netherlands-based Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health, met all of Health Canada’s requirements for human safety.

However, until a new Canadian label is approved, the drug will only be available through the Emergency Drug Release (EDR) program.

SLICE has been available for use in Canadian salmon farms for more than 10 years through the EDR program.
