Global farmed salmon output up 19%

Global farmed salmon production jumped 19.1 percent, to 378,000 metric tons, from the third quarter of 2010 to the third quarter of 2011, the largest third-quarter increase since 1996, according to Marine Harvest.

In its third-quarter financial report, released on Thursday, the farmed salmon giant (citing Kontali figures) said Chile’s farmed salmon output more than doubled, to 58,400 metric tons, in the third quarter of 2011, as the country rebounds from the infectious salmon anemia (ISA) outbreak of 2007 and 2008.

Norway posted a 9.7 increase in its third-quarter farmed salmon output, to 228,200 metric tons, while Scotland managed a 15.7 percent increase in its production, to 36,900 metric tons.

At 34.1 percent, the Faroe Islands also experienced an increase in its farmed salmon output, to 11,800 metric tons, which Marine Harvest described as “a new plateau” for the country. Australia’s production jumped 14.1, to 7,300 metric tons, in the third quarter of 2011.

North America, however, watched its farmed salmon output slip 5.4 percent, to 31,400 metric tons, in the third quarter of 2011, which Marine Harvest attributed to “challenging biology and poor sweater growth.”
