Production up, profit down for Marine Harvest

Marine Harvest on Monday announced that it harvested 83,000 metric tons of salmon (head-on, gutted) in the third quarter of 2011, up from 73,000 metric tons in the second quarter of 2011 and up from 64,000 metric tons in the third quarter of 2010.

Marine Harvest Norway accounted for the vast majority of the harvest at 48,000 metric tons. Marine Harvest Scotland represented 14,000 metric tons, followed by Chile at 11,000 metric tons and Canada at 8,000 metric tons. For Chile, that’s a 10,000-metric-ton increase from the same period last year.

The Norwegian company’s operational EBIT totaled NOK 450 million in the third quarter of 2011, down from NOK 750 million during the same period in 2010.

“Despite weak markets, price achievement in MH Norway and MH Scotland was strong due to favorable sales contracts during the quarter,” said the company. “The operational EBIT was adversely impacted by exceptional items of NOK 56 million, of which approximately NOK 36 million in MH Norway.”

Operational EBIT for Marine Harvest Norway reached NOK 5.90 per kilogram in the third quarter of 2011, down from NOK 12.90 in the second quarter of 2011 and down from 13.40 in the third quarter of 2010.

Marine Harvest will release its complete third-quarter results on 27 October.
