Increasing output of sole is China’s top mariculture priority, according to an action plan published at a recent gathering of the country’s top researchers and officials in sea-based aquaculture.
A recent forum organised by the Qingdao-based and government funded Yellow Sea Aquatic Products Research Academy introduced plans to improve offshore aquaculture equipment and quality for a list of species that also includes turbot, croaker, grouper, sea bass, and cobia.
During the forum government support and guidance for mariculture was outlined by Guan Chang Tao, chief scientist at the Qingdao-based National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology.
China has made expanding mariculture a priority of the government’s latest Five-Year Plan – an economic blueprint – but securing adequate space along China’s congested coastline remains a challenge.
