VIV China shifts focus to food safety

VIV China, an annual conference focused on animal production that will take place in Beijing this summer, will shift focus in 2009 to food safety, in an effort to meet the demands of the rapidly changing global market.

This year’s conference will tackle hot issues such as animal disease control (such as swine flu prevention), tracking and tracing of feed ingredients and meeting consumer demand for food safety.

VIV, which is also annually hosted in India, Turkey, Russia, and Latin America, put on its first VIV China event in 2008, reflecting the importance of China’s rapidly changing aquaculture industry.

More than 200 international and domestic companies have registered for the event, from countries such as Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, South Korea, Italy and India.

Food safety remains a huge concern for importers of Chinese seafood. Beijing has been working to restore confidence in the country’s food supply following global outrage over the use melamine and other banned substances in food production, including seafood production.

VIV China 2009 will take place from October 19 to 21.
