Peruvian industrial fishing company and fish oil and fishmeal producer TASA has kicked off an innovative program to turn operational waste into compost for use in beautifying the area surrounding its operations.

TASA’s Malabrigo plant, located in Peru’s northern coastal district of Rázuri, partnered with waste services operator Soluciones Ambientales to recover waste generated in the cleaning of the plant's equipment and compost the material into organic fertilizer. The joint effort aims to transform fishing industry waste into tangible benefits for local communities that host such operations.

Soluciones Ambientales has now delivered the first 800 kilograms of that fertilizer to the municipality of Rázuri. It will be used to improve the quality of the soil in the town’s main square and other public spaces, contributing to a healthier environment for locals.

The plant’s waste was previously sent to authorized sanitary landfills for final disposal, instead of repurposing it.

“We are happy to articulate efforts with our strategic partners, reflecting our commitment to the circular economy and the well-being of our community,” TASA Malabrigo Superintendent Eduardo Robles said. “By giving a second life to our waste, we not only reduce our environmental impact but also generate tangible benefits for Rázuri.”

TASA said that its Malabrigo plant is one of the pioneers in applying this recovery model, ensuring that more than 85 percent of its waste is destined for other production processes. This action is part of the company's goal of becoming the first “zero-waste” fishing company in the country, promoting a positive environmental, social, and economic impact.

TASA’s sustainability measures are based on four strategic pillars: the Cuidamar Program, in which the crews of its 48 vessels are trained in environmental care and conservation of marine species; the Entrepreneurial Families program, whereby employees' spouses are supported in starting their own sustainable businesses; the Cleaner Production program, under which the company is working to reduce its carbon footprint and water use; and the Sustainable Artisanal Fishing program, where small-scale fishers, processors, and mongers are trained to hone business skills and develop sustainable ventures.

Founded in 2002, TASA is the one of the world's largest producers and exporters of fishmeal and fish oil and one of the leading suppliers of refined fish oil and omega-3 concentrate. It has more than 2,800 employees.
