Super Bowl ad to tout ocean conservation

SeaWeb is running a 30-second TV advertisement during Sunday’s Super Bowl.

The Washington, D.C.-based ocean conservation organization has been teasing the ad via Facebook and Twitter for days, and on Sunday it said to its followers to “keep your eyes peeled for a unique piece that sheds light on the ocean.”

The spot was directed by Bob Talbot, a world-renowned marine photographer and cinematographer. He filmed the wildlife sequences for Warner Bros.’ Free Willy films and Universal Pictures’ Flipper film.

This year’s Super Bowl, the championship game of the National Football League (NFL), features the New England Patriots and New York Giants. The game is watched by more than 100 million viewers worldwide, and a 30-second ad cost an average of USD 3 million.

SeaWeb is also promoting the “Be Happy” campaign via social media. Launched this month, the initiative, which involves eight North American ocean conservation organizations, including SeaWeb, is designed to promote and educate consumers about sustainable seafood. So far, 830 people have taken the “Be Happy” pledge to support ocean-friendly seafood.
