Chicken of the Sea awards grandmother trained in mixed martial arts top prize

Chicken of the Sea has discovered its Sea the Possibilities Challenge winner in Barb Estabrook, a 75-year-old grandmother of five from Appleton, Wisconsin who decided to take up Tae Kwon Do after earning a black belt in mixed martial arts.

Estabrook is being celebrated by the major canned tuna provider for her commitment to living a “more adventurous, happier and healthier life” – a requisite in the guidelines for the Sea the Possibilities Challenge lifestyle initiative. She was selected as the Grand Prize winner for the challenge from a pool of thousands who set and achieved a health and fitness goal outside of their comfort zones.

Over the course of Chicken of the Sea’s three-month promotional challenge, Americans were encouraged to test out bold new cuisine, switch up everyday experiences and pursue adventures of all sorts to create a richer, more satisfying life both in the kitchen and outside it, according to the seafood provider. Challenges were accepted at one of three levels, with participants sharing their stories through writing, photography and video. Each month, nine winners were selected to receive USD 1,000 (EUR 884.31) prizes, thereafter becoming eligible for the USD 5,000 (EUR 4,421.98) Grand Prize since secured by Estabrook.

What started out as a volunteer opportunity for Estabrook at her local martial arts studio eventually transpired into her enrolling in a Tae Kwon Do class in March 2016. Already a fourth-degree black belt skilled in mixed martial arts, Estabrook was able to add to her well of expertise in the realm as well as inspire her grandchildren to join in.

“I never thought I would become a student again at the age of 75,” Estabrook said. “Chicken of the Sea’s challenge encouraged me to live large and even inspired my grandchildren to take up Tae Kwon Do. I hope my story can motivate others to live out their bucket-list goals, no matter their age.”
