New service combats seafood mislabeling

ACGT, a DNA sequencing and genomic analysis company, on Monday introduced Seafood ID, a service designed to meet the growing need for genetic identification of seafood.

Seafood ID is used to accurately verify the identity of seafood in cases of product mislabeling, as well as exploitation and illegal trafficking, according to ACGT, which is based in Wheeling, Ill.. The service can also identify poisonous marine species and genetically modified seafood.

The species identification service uses the COX 1 gene, which has been recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as the gold standard for seafood species identification. If analysis of the COX 1 gene is not enough, additional gene sequences can also be analyzed.

“Whether your project requires discrimination between Atlantic salmon and lake trout, or if your research involves the study of the cod migration patterns, with Seafood ID our specialists will work with you every step of the way from experimental design through data acquisition and processing,” said ACGT in a press release.
