Seafood advisory Web site re-launched

Purdue University on Wednesday announced it re-launched its Web site encouraging pregnant and nursing women and women who may become pregnant to make informed decisions about the seafood they eat.

The site also features a wallet card and iPhone application.

The wallet card is divided into categories of fish based on mercury and omega-3 content and gives consumers advice on how much fish to eat per week. For species with low mercury levels, 12 ounces per week can be safely consumed. For species with moderate mercury levels, only 4 ounces per week should be consumed.

The iPhone application and mobile phone-friendly version of the site answers questions such as why to avoid eating raw fish and gives seafood consumption advice. They also provide seafood recipes and photos of some species from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The site also features a map that allows users to click on their state to find local consumption advice, as well as commercial fish advisories, risks from contaminants, health benefits and how to clean fish.
