US senators seek clarity on seafood, pregnancy

U.S. Sens. Mary Landrieu, D-La., David Vitter, R-La., and 19 of their colleagues wrote to the president Tuesday to urge that his administration finalize updates to seafood advisories for pregnant women.

The letter noted that this is the third time a bipartisan group of senators has written to President Barack Obama asking him to help remove any roadblocks for the Food and Drug Administration to provide its updated advice for the safety of pregnant women consuming seafood.

The argument is that the last 2004 FDA update on seafood “has been interpreted as a recommendation to reduce or eliminate seafood consumption during pregnancy,” the letter states.
