Amazon-owned Whole Foods Market (WFM) is rapidly expanding – both with traditional stores and its new smaller Daily Shop stores – offering increasing opportunities for seafood suppliers.

Amazon also continues to increase the availability of groceries online, offering grocery delivery in over 5,000 U.S. cities and towns, including over 2,300 served by Same-Day Delivery, WFM said.

The Austin, Texas, U.S.A.-based operator of more than 550 stores recently announced the addition of Whole Foods Market Daily Shop stores in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.; Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. over the next two years.

The smaller stores are “designed to bring high-quality food and everyday essentials to customers in a streamlined footprint, with an emphasis on thoughtful product selection and an efficient shopping experience,” WFM said.

The format reflects an intentional approach to how products are curated and presented, making it easier for customers to shop for meals, pantry staples, and grab-and-go options, it added. Each store will feature a focused assortment of Whole Foods Market favorites, including fresh produce, meat and seafood, prepared foods, bakery items, and a curated selection of 365 by Whole Foods Market products.

While there are no seafood counters like there are in traditional stores, Daily Shop stores include a variety of packaged fresh, frozen, and shelf-stable seafood options. The stores will also highlight local and regional suppliers, offering a selection that reflects the surrounding community.

WFM launched the Daily Shop concept in New York City in 2024 and opened the first Daily Shop in London, U.K., in April. In total, 10 Daily Shop store will be opening this year, along with more than 100 WFM regular stores in the next few years, the company said.

In addition to boosting perishable grocery delivery, Amazon introduced its Amazon Grocery private label brand in the U.S. last fall.

Encompassing more than 1,000 “high quality” food items, the selection includes fresh meat and seafood, milk, produce, and pantry staples. Most products are priced under USD 5.00 (EUR 4.31), “offering exceptional value to customers,” Amazon said.

Seafood items in the private label line include: BAP-certified, large raw farmed shrimp, wild caught sockeye salmon skin-on fillet portions, and wild caught Pacific cod portions.

Amazon's private-label brands, which include Amazon Saver and 365 by Whole Foods Market, continue to gain sales momentum, the retailer said. Customers purchased 15 percent more private brand products in 2024 compared to the previous year across Amazon.com, Whole Foods Market, and Amazon Fresh.
