Sales chipper at UK chippies

Fish-and-chip sales are up "massively" in the United Kingdom this summer, as cost-conscious consumers treat themselves to an old-time favorite.

According to figures Seafish (the Sea Fish Industry Authority) released on Friday, fried-fish sales are up by 15 million portions so far this year, compared to last year.

Fish-and-chip shops, or chippes, represent just over half (51 percent) of fried-fish sales nationwide.

Seafish attributed the sales increase to the economic downturn, as Brits frequent their local chippies instead of splurging at an upscale restaurant.

"Value is driving consumer decisions in the current economic climate," said Jon Harman, development director for Seafish. "Fish-and-chip shops across the UK continue to deliver good value and high quality meals that are the healthiest of all the takeaways."

Added Alison Smith, owner of the Anstruther Fish Bar and winner of the 2008 Fish & Chip Shop of the Year competition, "We have seen a significant rise in visitors to the shop this summer. The good weather and the fact that people are holidaying at home have contributed to our strong trade, and let's not forget how much fun a stroll along the beach with a portion of fish and chips can be."
