Bergen, Norway-headquartered salmon farming group Grieg Seafood ASA harvested approximately 23,700 metric tons (MT) of fish in the fourth quarter of 2021, 3,429 MT more than in the corresponding period of 2020.
This total excludes volumes from Grieg’s Shetland operation, which was sold to Scottish Sea Farms on 15 December, 2021.
According to the group’s latest trading update, the Norwegian farm sites of Rogaland and Finnmark harvested around 7,300 MT and 12,400 MT, respectively, in Q4 2021, compared with 6,532 MT and 11,082 MT a year previously.
Its British Columbia, Canada, operations, meanwhile, produced 4,000 MT in the quarter, up from 2,657 MT in the corresponding period of last year.
For the full year 2021, Grieg harvested 75,600 MT, up from 71,142 MT in 2020.
The average farming cost for British Columbia in the quarter was CAD 9.40 (USD 7.53, EUR 6.57) per kilogram. For Rogaland and Finnmark, Norway these amounted to NOK 43.60 (USD 5.02, EUR 4.38) and NOK 38.10 (USD 4.38, EUR 3.82) per kilogram, respectively.

In December, producer Scottish Sea Farms completed the acquisition of Grieg Seafood Hjaltland UK Ltd. from Grieg Seafood ASA. Grieg said it was looking to narrow its focus, resources, and investments to its farming operations in Norway and Canada.
Included in the deal were Grieg Seafood Hjaltland’s freshwater hatchery, processing facility, and 21 marine farms around the Shetland Islands and Isle of Skye, which combined produced approximately 16,000 MT HOG of Atlantic salmon in 2020.
