The Global Aquaculture Alliance’s Best Aquaculture Standards (BAP) program has awarded Regal Springs North America’s Mexico tilapia farming operations with four-star status, the highest ranking achievable within the certification scheme.
The top-tier BAP distinction shows that Regal Springs North America’s Mexico units are committed to responsible production spanning the inspections of hatcheries, fish feed usage, farming operations, and fish processing standards. The whole end-to-end tilapia supply chain for the company’s Mexico division is inspected to a four-star BAP international standard, Regal Springs North America noted in a press release announcing the accomplishment. It has become the first tilapia producer in Mexico to secure the BAP achieve
“When we launched our Regal Springs WE CARE Integrated Sustainability Program in March, we said that it was the world’s first such program in the aquaculture industry. Even though our operations have many international certifications, we committed to keep on improving those so that our Naturally Better Tilapia remains the highest quality seafood choice for consumers,” said Keith Kandt, the marketing director for Regal Springs North America. "We are especially proud that the hard work and skills of our Regal Springs Mexico team in Chiapas has been independently recognized with the BAP 4 star Certification. It not easy to achieve.”
“The achievement of BAP 4 star Certification of our Regal Springs Mexico operations means that our Naturally Better Tilapia range now has another respected, independent international certification to reassure our customers and consumers,” added Guy Lott, the company’s vice president of sales. “Our Naturally Better Tilapia products are now certified to the two most demanding aquaculture certification standards in the world as our farms and operations are also certified to the Aquaculture Stewardship Council standard which Regal Springs Mexico was also the first to obtain in Mexico.”
The certification adds another layer of assurances for tilapia consumers, Lott said.
“Consumers can always be confident that when they are eating Regal Springs Naturally Better Tilapia, the fish is naturally farmed, never produced using antibiotics, preservatives, additives or chemicals that increase the water content of the fish. Consumers can simply enjoy Naturally Better Tilapia that is easy to cook in any recipe, tasty, nutritious, high in protein and low in fat,” he explained.
Bill Hoenig, the BAP market development manager for Latin America, said Regal Springs’ four-star status in the region is representative of the company’s diligence in matters of responsible aquaculture.
“Congratulations to Regal Springs Mexico for achieving BAP 4 star status in Mexico. This is a testament to the amount of time and effort that the company invests into ensuring that it operates in a responsible and sustainable manner,” Hoenig said.
