Soc Trang, Vietnam-based shrimp producer Fimex (Sao Ta) increased its shrimp production and exports in May.
Fimex produced 2,057 metric tons (MT) of processed shrimp in May, up 17 percent year-on-year and 30.6 percent from April 2021. Its accumulated export value reached USD 16.9 million (EUR 13.8 million), a growth of 13 percent from May last year and up 3 percent month-on-month.
Fimex said the main production period for local shrimp industry has begun in May and will last until October.
In its Mayupdate, the company said it expects its own farms in Mekong Delta will achieve the highest productivity this year due to careful preparation work and favorable weather conditions. Currently more than 1,000 MT of shrimp have been harvested from its farms for processing, with the main crop expected to be fully harvested by the middle of July.
Fimex’s May production was in line with increased shrimp output nationwide. Vietnam produced 81,000 MT of shrimp in the month, up 0.2 percent year-on-year. In the first five months of 2021, the country produced 253,600 MT of shrimp, up 6 percent year-on-year, including 85,800 MT of black tiger shrimp, up 1.6 percent; and 167,800 MT of vannamei, a growth of 8.4 percent year-on-year; according to data from the General Department of Fisheries.
Fimex operates its own farms on 270 hectares that supply material to its processing plants in the region, and also buys shrimp from local farmers for processing. It said it aims to expand its own farming footprint by 100 hectares this year. The expansion plan will be implemented by its subsidiary Khang An Foods, which operates in the farming and processing of aquaculture and agriculture products.
Fimex said it continues to consider shrimp as its core business, with the goal of doubling the farming area by 2023, according to its 2021-2025 strategy document.
