An outbreak of norovirus has led to the recall of additional oysters nationwide in Canada, including some lots from Taylor Shellfish Canada.
On 20 March, Bowser, British Columbia, Canada-based Stellar Bay Shellfish recalled some of its oysters, after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency investigated a norovirus illness outbreak.
Now, Vancouver, British Columbia-based Pacific Rim Shellfish is recalling oysters nationwide due to possible norovirus contamination, CFIA said in a press release.
“There have been reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products,” CFIA said, without providing additional details.
In addition, Taylor Shellfish Canada ULC, doing business as Fanny Bay Oysters, is recalling certain Taylor Shellfish Canada ULC brand oysters from the marketplace due to possible norovirus contamination.
The recalled oysters, under the brand names Fanny Bay, Royal Miyagi, and Sunseeker, have been sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec and may have been distributed in other provinces and territories, CIFA said in a press release.
Pacific Rim’s recalled oysters, sold under the brand Pacific Rim Shellfish (2003) Corp., have been sold in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, and Ontario and may have been distributed in other provinces and territories, CFIA said.
The oysters, harvested between 9 March and 19 March, were distributed to restaurants and institutions.
CFIA is conducting a food-safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.
“If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated food recall warnings,” the agency said. “The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing the recalled products from the marketplace.”
