India: June 2019 shrimp sourcing update

India’s shrimp output in the first half of 2019 has decreased considerably compared to the first half of 2018. 

The main factor confirming that production is down is the fact that hatcheries have reported to have drained 3 to 4 billion unsold post-larvae. If harvested, these post-larvae could have resulted in an output of 50,000 tonnes of shrimp. In many areas, farmers that stocked their ponds were struck by diseases. Even though farmers wanted to go for larger sizes, due to the diseases they were forced to harvest resulting in smaller sizes flooding the market. 

A significant number of farmers in Andhra Pradesh, especially those who skipped the first crop, stocked their ponds in June and intend to harvest from the end of August onwards, hoping for better prices by that time...
