Projections for the Southern European market in 2020 were relatively positive. With high Christmas sales, most Spanish importers could get rid of stock before the start of January.
This paved the way for smooth preparations for the Easter season – that is, until the outbreak of COVID-19. The pandemic has cost Spain its Easter season and is likely to dent a big part of the summer season as well.
Just like in Northwestern Europe, importers focusing on the foodservice and gastronomy industry have been suffering. On the positive side, importers delivering to retail can at least sell parts of their stock. How exactly the market will evolve in the coming months still remains unclear.
