IFFO, the Marine Ingredients Organization, has reported increased availability of raw material for fishmeal and fish oil production through October 2020.
The overall performance of global production was in line with 10-year averages compiled by the organization, according to its monthly report. Every region studied by IFFO saw improved year-over-year results compared to October 2019, with two exceptions: Peru and the United States.
“The higher-than-expected quota announced in Peru seems to have affected the price of domestic fishmeal. Fishmeal consumption has temporarily slowed down as the main aquaculture season is now over,” IFFO reported. “As a result, aquafeed production is set to drop.”
Aquafeed production in China is also decreasing as the Northern Hemisphere enters winter, when demand for feed decreases, IFFO said.
Landings in India have shown improvement following the end of a COVID-19 lockdown there in the spring, with higher year-over-year results recorded in every month through the summer and fall.
Cumulative global fishmeal production through 2020 thus far is down 1.4 percent from 2019, with every region except for the Denmark/Norway region and Africa reporting lower totals. Fish oil production is also down, but by less than 1 percent, “driven by significant drops in the historically big fish oil-producing countries of Peru and the U.S.A., plus India,” IFFO said.
