India, Ecuador continue to dominate US shrimp imports

India, Ecuador, and Indonesia held the top spots as the three largest sources of shrimp for the U.S. in May 2022. Combined, the three countries imported a total of 59,501 metric tons (MT).

India, continuing to maintain its spot of largest exporter of shrimp to the U.S., shipped a total of 24,787 MT,  a significant increase from the country’s April 2022 cumulative total of 19,991 MT.

The second-highest exporter, Ecuador, also saw growth 18,070 MT sent to the U.S. in May 2022, compared to 15,300 MT in April.

Indonesia was third on the list, with a total of 16,644 MT – a decrease from the 17,233 MT sent in May 2021.

Fourth-highest on the list was Vietnam with a total of 7,053 MT, which was an increase from 6,154 MT shipped in 2021.

Thailand was the fifth-largest importer receiving 3,061MT which is higher than the 2,863 MT sent a year prior. 

Following the top five suppliers were Mexico with 880 MT, higher than the total for 2021 at 781 MT; China at 645 MT, which is significantly less than 829 MT in 2021; Peru which was also down from 483 MT in May 2021 to 240 MT in May 2022; Canada increased to 220 MT, up from 91 MT in 2021; and Honduras decreased from 99 MT in 2021 to 80 MT in 2022.

An additional notable decline in imports was in Venezuela as it exported 159 MT In May 2021, and exported no shrimp at all in May 2022.
