J.J. McDonnell, a seafood distributor based in Maryland, U.S.A., is building a new 60,000-square-foot facility slated to open in September 2016, according to an article in Food and Drink International.
The article reports that the new facility, located in Elkridge, Maryland, will not only be much larger than J.J. McDonnell’s current headquarters, but will have upgraded equipment including state-of-the-art refrigeration and temperature controls systems designed to “help make it the premier seafood company in the region.”
“We want to grow,” company owner George McManus said in the article. “I’m really excited about this new facility because it will bring an injection of energy and excitement into the company. It shows we are investing in the future of the seafood industry, and that we expect it to be a great one.”
McManus said in setting up the new facility, the company put special focus into sustainability and food safety. Its new system includes traceability in its supply chain, an updated quality control plan and a new bycatch program that focuses on selling underutilized fish.
J.J. McDonnell has 130 employees and is based in Jessup, Maryland.
